Early reviews for HipPOP: "It
rocks, it rolls, and sometimes it does both at once. It's droopy, druggy,
kinetic, clear-eyed, trad, contempo, satisfied, searching, aware, fearless.
It's
early in the process---but I just wanted you to know I really like the
album (big surprise). "I Like Summer" is my guilty pleasure, Beach Boy
zydeco. After the first several listens, the album strikes me as smart,
clever, fun, and INDEPENDENT in the truly Austin sense "Call
it post-punk folk Americana or post-modern art-house-hippie roots-rock.
. . . Lissa's voice has the sort of post-punk authority and elasticity
that fans of Ani DiFranco or Debbie Harry will enjoy. . . .The music extends
to folk-inflected sounds and flat-out rockers. . . .Their signature musical
nonconformity and their heyday during the punk era both inform their melange
of sounds." "For
people with eclectic tastes in music and one of those Pioneer six-disc
players in the trunk, HipPOP is a perfect choice to add diversity to the
journey almost regardless of what genre[s] might be in the other slots."
"[HipPop]
is overflowing with great sonic turns on songs that are touching, funny
and utterly original."
